Answer: With the help of foundations, individuals, faith-based, business, and social service organizations, SHH provides its Continuum of Services to single mothers with children and single women experiencing homelessness in Denver. Resources and support provided through the In-House Stabilization, Follow-Up, and Transitional Housing Programs, enable women to secure stable housing so as to achieve and maintain self-sufficiency. Answer: SHH helping homeless families and single women, was founded by Catherine Bevanda in after she learned the convent next to Sacred Heart School in lower downtown Denver had closed. Catherine, who came to Denver to study at Loretto Heights, supported herself by working at an orphanage and at Marycrest Convent, which was operating a skeletal homeless shelter at the time. Thinking she could expand on that idea in the abandoned convent, she opened its doors to those people in Denver, who, for one reason or another, found themselves homeless. Sacred Heart House of
Our two-year Transitional Housing Program offers affordable living to mothers pursuing educational/job training goals. At SHU, we encourage students to practice self-advocacy and problem-solving as part of their transition to college and independent living. We also want to ensure families have access to information about available resources and services to be collaborative partners supporting students during their college experience. Students are responsible for keeping their health insurance information current. As exciting and emotional as it is for young people to head off to college, this milestone can be tough for parents, too. It might be the first time their child is living away from home. Will this new home away from home provide your child with the resources, support systems and academic and social opportunities that ensure their safety, well-being and success? At Sacred Heart, the answer is a resounding yes! With nearly three dozen emergency call boxes stationed near residence halls, off-campus housing, academic buildings, parking lots and garages, students are never far from help and a direct connection with public safety officers. Involvement: Encouraging Campus Engagement Getting involved in campus life is key to building community and reducing homesickness. When giving to Sacred Heart House, your donation goes directly to helping homeless families, moms and their kids, as well as single women experiencing homelessness become self-sufficient.
